PGP - Pretty Good Privacy

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) and GPG (GNU Privacy Guard) are the best and ONLY standard softwares for email encryption. They can also encrypt your files and some versions can also encrypt your hard disk. For encrypted voice communication over the Internet there is "the PGP phone".

"Pretty Good Privacy" was probably the biggest understatement of the 1990's. The program is so secure that the US government even tried to change the laws to stop it! It takes some time to learn to use PGP or GPG. But if you dislike that others than the intended recipients read your emails then it is worth the effort.

PGP is freeware for non-commercial use and GPG is free for any use. You can find everything you need and more at The International PGP Home Page.

NOTE! Are you going to travel abroad? Or do you live in a not so free country? In some countries it is illegal to use encryption. And in some of those countries you can even get jail time just for having an encrypted text.

My public PGP key

One of the things that made PGP so revolutionary is that PGP uses "public key cryptography". What is encrypted with my public key can only be decrypted with my secret key, and vice versa. This means I can publish my public key openly so that any one can send encrypted emails to me. It also means that any one can verify the electronic signature of the emails and documents I have signed.

The key block you see below is my public key. If you want to add the key to your "PGP key ring" all you have to do is to save this web page to disk and feed it to the PGP key manager utility. PGP will automatically find the key in the page. An even simpler option is to cut and paste the key block from this page into the PGP key manager.
